Kluber Makes Light Work of Siemens Desiro Class 185 Anti Roll Bar Bush Maintenance

01/07/2009 14:55:09   Hits:616

Kluber and Dopag save thousands for Siemens.

During routine maintenance work, the engineers working on Siemens Desiro Class 185 rail vehicles were having major problems applying grease to the correct lubrication points on rail vehicle anti roll bars due to the tight tolerances involved. Once in place Kluber US BB 312 is the ideal lubricant, however due to the stiffness of this grease it was proving extremely difficult to dispense preventing lubrication taking place while the anti roll bar was in situ. In order to effectively apply the lubricant the anti roll bar had to be disassembled. This took approximately 1hour with two engineers for each bar and 12 hours to do all 12 anti roll bars on a 3 carriage vehicle. Siemens contacted Kluber to assist with the application of the grease in order to attempt to make it more cost effective.

On investigation it became apparent that the problem was due purely to the extremely high NLGI classification of Kluber US BB 312. It was almost impossible to apply via a conventional grease gun and nipple.

Working with a reliable partner in the dispensing of lubricants Kluber and Dopag UK came up with a bespoke piece of dispensing equipment for this application. The only change required to the lube point was the replacement of the push-fit grease nipples with new button type nipples to link to the new grease applicator.

By utilising the new equipment all 12 bars can now be lubricated in situ by 1 engineer in approximately 1 hour. This is a considerable saving of 11 hours of labour per 3 carriage vehicle.

These anti roll bars are lubricated at six monthly intervals so the annual saving in man hours per 3 carriage train equates to 22hrs. The Class 185 fleet alone in Manchester consists of 51 three carriage train sets so the annual savings here in man hours are 1122 hours (approximately 30 weeks) of labour.

The impact of applying the correct grease via the most suitable method of application is a staggering £.46,920 saving based on manpower alone for the whole fleet of 51 vehicles. This does not take into account the cut in manpower, freeing up engineers to do other tasks.
