Daylight Robbery

01/06/2009 14:33:26   Hits:997

I’ve just had my first year’s accounts back from my accountant. Results are pretty good, helped along by gaining our first customers from the public sector and from the Middle East. We’ve built an impressive corporate portfolio and have a good balance between research, marketing and communications projects. Everything is looking promising. Yet, instead of celebrating that Rainmaker’s first year has been so successful, I’ve been wandering round muttering bad words under my breath and scaring the dog. This is because the government would now like me to fork out something called corporation tax.

I’m still trying to work out what they’ve done to deserve the money. I don’t recall them giving me a grant to start up, or offering to pay my mortgage, so I didn’t have to raid my savings each month. I have no memory of being offered a nice government contract. They didn’t send as much as a Good Luck card. All the other organisations that I pay provide my company with goods and services, so why should the government take money and provide nothing in return?
Alison Daniels owns Rainmaker Projects which specialises in marketing, research and communications for business growth. The company has particular strengths in helping companies to develop new markets, products and customers and a wealth of experience working with technical clients.
